Talks Today as Trump Speaks While Tehran Blocks Strait

  • Donald Trump said on Sunday that U.S. officials will go to Pakistan on Monday to hold talks with Iran, giving hope that the ceasefire (temporary stop to fighting) might be extended before it ends on Wednesday.
  • There is a chance of these talks happening, but Iran has not confirmed this yet. At the same time, ships are still unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz because of threats from Iran and a S. blockade on ships going to and from Iranian ports.
  • The White House said that Vice-President J. D. Vance will lead the U.S. team, along with officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
  • Iranian officials said earlier on Sunday that they are still ready for talks, but made it clear that ships will not be allowed through the Strait of Hormuz as long as the U.S. blockade continues.
  • Iran’s parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said, “it is not possible for others to use the Strait of Hormuz when we ourselves cannot.”
  • Trump accused Iran of breaking the ceasefire by attacking ships and warned that the U.S. would destroy Iran’s civilian infrastructure if Iran does not agree to the deal.
  • He said that if Iran refuses, the U.S. would “destroy every power plant and every bridge in Iran.”
  • It is still unclear if either side has changed their stand on important issues that had earlier stopped the talks. These include:
  • Iran’s nuclear program
  • Its role in regional conflicts through proxy groups
  • Control of the Strait of Hormuz
  • Ghalibaf, who is leading Iran in the talks, said before Trump’s statement that Iran still wants peace, even though there is a blockade and long-standing mistrust with the U.S.
  • He said, “we will continue with diplomacy,” but also admitted that there is still a big gap between the two sides.
  • Iran’s Foreign Ministry said that the S. naval blockade is illegal and breaks both the ceasefire and international law.
  • Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said on X that the blockade goes against the ceasefire arranged by Pakistan.
  • He also said that punishing Iran’s population like this is a war crime and a crime against humanity.
  • With only a few days left before the ceasefire ends, Iran said it has received new proposals from the U.S.
  • Pakistan is trying to arrange another round of direct talks, and security has been increased in Islamabad for this.
  • A regional official said that final preparations are going on, and S. security teams have already reached Pakistan.

23 Dead in Explosion at Firecracker Factory Near Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu

  • At least 23 workers were killed and 8 injured in a major explosion at a firecracker factory in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The blast happened at Vanaja Fireworks Unit in Kattanarpatti near Virudhunagar.
  • Later, a second explosion injured 17 more people, including 6 police officers and 4 firemen. Many rescuers and reporters at the site narrowly escaped.
  • Most of the victims were burned badly and could not be identified, and some bodies were torn apart due to the powerful blast. Firefighters had to collect body parts from the site.
  • Several bodies were found under debris after a shed collapsed on workers.
  • Two people are in critical condition with over 80% burns. All injured people, including a child and five women, were taken to Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital.
  • Following orders from Chief Minister K. Stalin, ministers and local leaders rushed to the spot to manage rescue work.
  • District Collector O. Sukhaputra and SP N. Shreenatha stayed at the site to supervise operations.
  • The Collector said the explosion happened around 3:15 p.m. in a shed where chemicals were being mixed.
  • He also said that the factory should have been closed on Sunday, but it was running without permission.
  • Around 40 workers were present, even though rules say only a small number should work at a time.
  • Workers were also working too close to the chemical mixing area, which is against safety rules.
  • Extra medical teams were sent to the hospital, and experts from Madurai’s Government Rajaji Hospital were called for postmortems.
  • A factory owner questioned how so many people died when rules allow only 11–12 workers in a unit.
  • He warned that licensed factories might face strict action because of this incident.
  • In properly licensed factories:
  • Only 4 workers are allowed inside a shed
  • Sheds must be far apart to reduce damage in case of blasts
  • An official said that if safety rules were followed, the deaths could have been much lower.
  • Balamurugan questioned how the factory got a license without proper road access.
  • Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar expressed sadness and offered condolences.
  • Firefighters worked for a long time to control the fire, as chemicals kept causing small explosions.
  • Before help arrived, local people rescued injured workers and took them to hospitals.
  • The second blast happened at 7:20 p.m. while debris was being cleared, creating panic again.
  • Officials, including the Collector and SP, had to run for safety during the second explosion.
  • There was tension when the Collector was missing briefly, but he was later found safe.
  • Injured people were taken to hospitals in Sivakasi and Virudhunagar.

Crude Oil Imports Dropped by Nearly 17% in March Amid Ongoing Conflict

  • India’s crude oil imports fell by about 17% in March compared to last year, mainly because of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
  • Because of this drop, India spent about 4.9% less money on crude oil imports.
  • According to data:
  • India imported 18.9 million tonnes of crude oil in March
  • Last year in the same month, it was 8 million tonnes
  • India spent $11.7 billion this March, compared to $12.3 billion last year.
  • Even though oil imports dropped, the total import bill for oil and gas stayed almost the same at around $11 billion.
  • The price of crude oil increased sharply to $113.49 per barrel, compared to $69.01 in February.
  • LPG (cooking gas) usage also decreased:
  • Total use fell by 8%
  • Household cylinder sales dropped by 1%
  • Non-household use fell by nearly 48%
  • Bulk LPG sales dropped by a huge 5%
  • At the same time, India is increasing the use of piped natural gas (PNG), which is why:
  • LNG imports increased by over 20%
  • Total natural gas use increased by 7.2%, reaching 5,727 MMSCM
  • However, the data is still not final, and officials warned that actual numbers may change because the West Asia conflict could affect supply and usage further.
