Injuries succumbs to teenager by classmate stabbed Udaipur
Tensions escalate as a crowd gathers outside a hospital and other locations; police resort to lathi charge; additional forces deployed to maintain law and order; prohibitory orders remain in effect across the city.
- A 15-year-old boy, who was reportedly stabbed by his classmate following a fight at a government school in Udaipur, passed away on Monday. The incident, which occurred on August 16, triggered communal violence in the city, leading to numerous cars being set on fire and some shops being ransacked.
- The condition of the victim, Devraj, worsened on Monday after spending four days in the intensive care unit at Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital. Suffering from severe thigh injuries, the boy was being treated by a team of specialist doctors who had come from Jaipur.
- Devraj’s sister and cousin tied a rakhi on his wrist for Raksha Bandhan just before he passed away. The hospital administration moved his body to the mortuary, and a decision on the timing of the cremation was still pending.
- The news of Devraj’s death caused tension in Udaipur, leading to a restless crowd assembling outside the hospital. To disperse the crowd there and in various parts of the city, the police had to resort to a lathi charge.
- Extensive security measures were put in place with police forces deployed at sensitive locations. Several battalions of the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary were dispatched to Udaipur to maintain law and order throughout the night. The suspension of mobile internet services was also extended for another 24 hours.
- The police detained the student who allegedly stabbed Devraj and arrested his father. On Saturday, officials from the Udaipur Municipal Corporation demolished the boy’s rented house, stating that it had been built illegally on Forest Department land.
- Udaipur City MLA Tarachand Jain informed journalists that the State government would provide ₹51 lakh in financial assistance to the next of kin of the deceased. Additionally, a family member would be offered a contractual job, and the family was assured of adequate security. The accused’s trial would also be conducted in a court fast-track.
- Minister of State for Home, Jawahar Singh Bedam, urged the people of Udaipur and other regions of Rajasthan to remain calm and uphold peace. Udaipur’s Superintendent of Police, Yogesh Goyal, also issued a warning that strict action would be taken against anyone who incites trouble or engages in violence.
- The prohibitory orders banning public gatherings will remain in effect in the city.
A man has been arrested in connection with the rape of a student in Bengaluru

- Using a combination of human and artificial intelligence, the police located and apprehended 24-year-old Mukeshwaran at his residence in Adugodi, S.R. Nagar.
- The incident reportedly took place between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. when a 21-year-old woman was on her way back to her flat in Chandapura after dining in Koramangala.
- Mukeshwaran, who was intoxicated and heading home in the early morning, encountered the distressed woman on the roadside, offered to help her, and she accepted his offer.
- Exploiting the situation, Mukeshwaran allegedly took her to a secluded area near a truck bay on Hosur Road and assaulted her, overpowering the exhausted and shocked victim.
- The police acquired crucial information, which was confirmed by technical details. They formed five teams of 50 officers each, who reviewed footage from over 100 CCTV cameras.
- For further investigation, the suspect has been taken into custody.
The head of the Clean Ganga mission has highlighted that the progress of the projects is moving slowly
- In a recent meeting, the head of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG)—the Centre’s flagship initiative to clean the Ganga and its tributaries—expressed concern about the slow progress of river-cleaning projects being carried out in various states under the mission.
- Since 2015, under the Namami Gange mission, many projects have been initiated, which is crucial and costly for enhancing sewage management. Almost ₹37,550 crore was approved for these projects, but by June 2024, only ₹18,033 crore had been used. Out of this amount, ₹15,039 crore was spent specifically on sewage infrastructure projects.
- DG, NMCG (Rajeev Mittal) noted that project expenditure has been very slow, according to a meeting held on July 12.
- Authorities in Uttar Pradesh were questioned about the low expenditure rate; they reported that ₹15.16 crore had been spent on six projects in various cities and that funds received in April were only processed by mid-June.
- The official stated that payments totaling ₹25 crore are currently in progress.
- In response to The Hindu’s request for clarification, the NMCG clarified that the observation referred to all states, not specifically Uttar Pradesh.
- The NMCG noted that expenditures in the first quarter are typically slow but tend to increase in later quarters, and the review aimed to ensure expenditure picks up in the remaining financial year.
- The NMCG usually handles 15 to 16 projects annually and has completed 112 projects in the past seven years, making four projects per quarter a normal trend.
