• In just one month it has reached 27%, around eight times higher across the globe.
• The first case of JN.1 variant was found in Luxembourg in August 2023 and now it is dominated in a few countries.
• The JN.1 variant has an additional mutation,unlike parent lineage BA.2.86, which significantly boosts its immune system then the chances are high that it can be a dominant variant across the country.
• The JN.1 variant also has more transmissibility than other omicron lineages.
• The winter season in some countries makes it easier for the JN.1 variant to spread rapidly.
• However , no outbreak of JN.1 variant has been recorded yet despite the strong immune system and high transmissibility of the variant.
• Because of the high increase of the JN.1 variant across the globe, WHO has declared it as a separate variant of interest.
• The International health bodies have also noted that the JN.1 variant doesn’t have more severity and fatality compared to other viruses.
• In India the first case of covid 19 due to JN.1 variant was reported in kerala during routine surveillance of coronavirus.
• The highest cases of JN.1 variant has been reported in Goa around 19 cases so far.
• There are 21 cases of JN.1 variant in India so far and all cases are mildly needed for home isolation.
• The universal masking should not be mandatory at this stage but for those people who have influenza like illness and severe acute respiratory infections are advised to mask up and be tested if required.
• India also should not repeat last time mistakes and should not start shaming states which have a high number of covid cases.
• Public health is more important for the nation and it shouldn’t be the chance of politics.
