U.S.-Iran talks uncertain as ceasefire ends today

  • As the two-week ceasefire (temporary peace) in the U.S.–Israel conflict with Iran is about to end on Wednesday, Iran said on Tuesday that the S. blocking its ports and seizing a tanker in the Gulf of Oman breaks the ceasefire agreement.
  • Iran also said that it has not yet decided whether it will join the next round of talks with the U.S., which are planned to be held in Islamabad. This is despite U.S. President Donald Trump saying that talks would happen “soon.”
  • Pakistan said it has completed all preparations for the talks, but by Tuesday evening, it had not received any official confirmation from Iran.
  • Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a social media post that blocking Iran’s ports is like an act of war, and therefore it breaks the ceasefire. He also said that attacking a commercial ship and arresting its crew is an even bigger violation.
  • He added that Iran knows how to get around restrictions, protect its interests, and stand strong against pressure or threats.
  • Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaeri told state media that no final decision has been taken about attending the talks in Pakistan. He blamed this on the inconsistent behavior and unacceptable actions of the United States.
  • On Monday, Donald Trump said that Vice-President J.D. Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner had already left for Islamabad.
  • However, U.S. media reports on Tuesday said that D. Vance’s visit has been put on hold, because Iran has not replied to U.S. proposals.
  • Iran’s Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that Trump is trying to force Iran to surrender, which Iran will not accept.
  • In a social media post, he said that Trump is using pressure and ceasefire violations to turn talks into a way to make Iran surrender or to justify starting the conflict again. He clearly said that Iran will not accept talks held under threats.
  • He also said that Iran has spent the last two weeks preparing new plans or actions on the battlefield.
  • Earlier, Trump accused Iran of breaking the ceasefire many times and said in an interview that the U.S. will eventually get a good deal because Iran “has no choice.”
  • He warned that the S. is fully ready to take action if Iran does not agree to a deal. He said the U.S. has strong military power and has used this time to restock, and suggested that Iran may have done the same.
  • Trump also said that the S. military is completely prepared for action.
  • Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that Pakistan is still trying to help both sides talk and solve the issue peacefully.
  • By 7:30 p.m. Pakistan time, he confirmed that Iran had still not given any official response.
  • He said Pakistan is in regular contact with Iranian officials and is fully committed to peaceful talks and diplomacy.
  • He also said that the ceasefire will end at 4:50 a.m. PST on April 22, and that Iran’s decision before this time is very important.
  • Tarar added that Pakistan has made honest efforts to convince Iran to take part in the second round of talks.
  • Trump had announced the two-week ceasefire on April 8 after 40 days of fighting.
  • On April 11, Vice-President Vance held direct talks in Islamabad with an Iranian team led by Ghalibaf, but no agreement was reached.
  • The next day, Trump blocked ships going to and from Iranian ports.
  • On Sunday, the U.S. military captured an Iranian ship in the Gulf of Oman, increasing tensions just before the ceasefire deadline.
  • Earlier, Iran had said it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz for trade, but later changed its decision after Trump said the blockade would continue until a deal is made.
  • Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the S. blockade and strict demands have delayed the start of new talks.

13 Dead in Blast at Fireworks Facility Prepared for Thrissur Pooram Festival

  • At least 13 people died and around 40 were injured in a series of explosions followed by a fire at a fireworks factory in Mundathikode near Thrissur in Kerala on Tuesday. This is one of the worst such accidents in the area.
  • The factory was set up on a five-acre paddy field and was making fireworks for the Thiruvambady Devaswom, one of the groups that organize the famous Thrissur Pooram festival.

  • The explosion happened at around 3:30 p.m., and it quickly caused a fire that spread to many buildings in the area.

  • The factory was running with a licence in the name of Mundathikode Satheesh, who is also reported to have serious burn injuries.
  • The exact number of workers present during the explosion is still not known.
  • This incident happened just two days after another blast in Tamil Nadu, where 25 people died in a fireworks unit.
  • President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sadness and offered condolences to the families of the victims and wished for the recovery of the injured.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief and announced ₹2 lakh compensation for families of the dead and ₹50,000 for the injured.

  • He also said that if needed, specialist doctors from outside the state will be called.
  • The Chief Minister added that departments like police, fire services, health, revenue, and disaster management are working together under a special monitoring system.
  • The explosion was so strong that sheds were blown apart and debris was thrown into nearby fields.
  • Rescue work has been very difficult because of ongoing small explosions and the presence of unexploded fireworks materials.
  • During rescue operations, another small explosion happened, forcing rescue teams to move back for safety and then continue carefully.
