Charge Sheet Submitted Against Seven in Pune Car Crash Incident

The 900-page police document lists the parents of the minor accused, whose case is being processed separately by the Juvenile Justice Board.

  • Police in Pune have filed a chargesheet against seven individuals, including the parents of a minor boy who was allegedly driving, in connection with the luxury car accident case. This was done in a Pune court more than two months after the fatal crash, an official said on Friday.
  • The 900-page charge sheet, submitted on Thursday in a sessions court, has excluded the 17-year-old boy, whose case is being handled separately by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB). Meanwhile, the seven accused face charges under IPC sections for criminal conspiracy, tampering with evidence, and other related offenses.
  • On the morning of May 19 in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar, a high-end car allegedly driven by a minor under the influence of alcohol struck and killed two IT professionals on motorcycles, who were originally from Madhya Pradesh. The boy’s father is a prominent figure in the construction industry.
  • “We submitted a 900-page chargesheet against seven individuals in a Pune court on Thursday. This includes the minor’s parents, two doctors, a staff member from Sassoon General Hospital, and two middlemen,” said Shailesh Balkawade, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime).
  • The boy’s parents, along with two Sassoon General Hospital doctors — Ajay Taware, who was the head of the forensic medicine department at the time, and Dr. Shrihari Halnor — as well as Atul Ghatkamble, a staffer at the Maharashtra government-run medical facility, are accused of swapping the boy’s blood samples with those of his mother after the crash.
  • Two other accused, Ashpak Makandar and Amar Gaikwad, acted as intermediaries between the boy’s father and the doctors to facilitate financial transactions for swapping blood samples, according to the chargesheet. Balkawade stated that the charge sheet includes a crash impact analysis report, technical evidence, and forensic laboratory and DNA reports.

A soldier and a Pakistani infiltrator were killed near the Line of Control in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir

  • An Army soldier and a Pakistani infiltrator were killed in a gunfight that ensued after an attack on an Army post near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday morning.
  • An Army spokesperson reported that a group of two to three infiltrators exploited bad weather and poor visibility along the LoC in the Machil Sector to fire on a forward Army post from close range.
  • “The alert troops responded forcefully, and during the subsequent firefight, one Pakistani intruder was killed. Weapons, ammunition, and war-like stores were recovered. The identity and affiliation of the Pakistani national are being determined,” the Army stated.
  • Rifleman Mohit Rathour has been identified as the deceased soldier. “Chinar Warriors salute his immense valor and sacrifice and stand in solidarity with the bereaved family,” the Army stated. Another soldier who was injured is in stable condition.

Environmentalists are alarmed as Himachal Pradesh experiences a gradual shift in snowfall patterns

  • Himachal Pradesh has experienced a decline in snow cover over the years, along with a gradual shift in snowfall patterns from the winter months to early summer. This has raised concerns about climate variability in the ecologically fragile Himalayas.
  • The reduction in snow cover during the peak winter months of December and January is particularly concerning and alarming, as it could impact water availability during summer. The snow that falls during these peak winters typically lasts a long time and enhances the discharge reliability of major river basins during the summer.
  • Research conducted by the Centre on Climate Change at the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (HIMCOSTE) has disclosed that every major river basin in Himachal Pradesh, including the Satluj, Ravi, Chenab, and Beas, experienced an overall decrease of 12.72% in snow-covered area during the 2023-24 winter compared to the 2022-23 winter.
  • The study, using Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS) satellite data, also highlights that during 2023-24, the early winter months of October-November saw a decrease in snow cover area, except for the Ravi basin, which showed a slight increase in snow cover area in October.
  • Similarly, the peak winter months of December-January experienced a decline in the snow-covered area. Notably, during the late winter months of February and March, the trend reversed, showing an increase in snow-covered area in all basins compared to the previous year.
  • In fact, during April, the snow cover area expanded due to fresh snowfall in the early summer on the higher mountain reaches across all the basins.
