9 Killed After Fire Breaks Out in Delhi Building

  • Nine people died in a major fire that broke out in a residential building in Shahdara, East Delhi, during the early hours of Sunday. Rescue teams safely evacuated 15 people. Out of the nine dead, five belonged to one family.
  • The fire was reported at around 48 a.m. in a building located in the Vivek Vihar Phase I residential complex.
  • Eyewitnesses said the fire started on the first floor, possibly due to an air-conditioner, and then rapidly spread to the three floors above.
  • Officials of the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said the fire was completely brought under control at around 25 a.m.
  • Two residents suffered injuries. Several people were taken to a nearby hospital while rescue and search operations continued during the morning hours.
  • Officials said that most of the people taken to the hospital were discharged immediately after treatment.
  • DFS Duty Officer Mukesh Verma said that search-and-rescue work and firefighting operations were carried out together at the same time.
  • He said the building had a basement, a stilt area, and four upper floors, spread across more than 7,000 square feet.
  • There were two flats on every floor, with one flat on the front side and the other on the rear side of the building.
  • Officials said the rear side of the building was covered with grilles, which created difficulties during the rescue operation.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and announced financial assistance for the families of the dead and for the injured.
  • After the search operation ended, the DFS and the police confirmed that nine charred bodies had been recovered.
  • Out of the recovered bodies, one was found on the first floor, five on the second floor, and three on a locked staircase on the third floor.
  • Officials said that while most residents living in the front-side flats were rescued safely, the people living on the rear side suffered the most.
  • The deceased belonged to three different families.
  • Authorities said that a detailed investigation is still going on to find out the exact cause of the fire.
  • Fourteen firefighting units were used to control the blaze, including fire tenders, water bowsers, and other special rescue equipment.
  • The incident happened a little more than a month after another similar tragedy in Delhi, in which nine members of a family died in a fire in Palam Colony in southwest Delhi on March 18.
  • In a post on X, Mr. Modi said that the loss of lives in the fire incident in Delhi’s Shahdara district was extremely painful and distressing.
  • He offered condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured people.
  • The Prime Minister also announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹50,000 for every injured person.

Nepal Raises Concern with India and China Over Kailash Yatra Through Lipulekh Pass

  • Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s upcoming visit to Nepal came under a shadow on Sunday after Nepal expressed “concerns” to both India and China regarding the next season of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra through the Kalapani-Limpiyadhura-Lipulekh region. Nepal again stated that the region is part of its sovereign territory.
  • Replying to Kathmandu’s remarks, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Nepal’s claims over the Lipulekh Pass are not based on “historical facts”.
  • On April 30, the MEA had announced that the next round of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra would take place during June-August in coordination with the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
  • Earlier, attention was already on Mr. Misri’s proposed Kathmandu visit because there was uncertainty over getting a meeting with Nepal’s new Prime Minister, Balendra Shah.
  • Since taking charge in March, he has been following a restrictive diplomatic protocol and has refused to meet foreign envoys.
  • In an official statement, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said that the Government of Nepal is fully clear and firm on the fact that Limpiyadhura, Lipulek and Kalapani, located east of the Mahakali river, have been integral parts of Nepal since the Treaty of Sugauli signed in 1816.
  • Responding to Nepal’s statement, MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said late on Sunday that such claims are “neither justified nor based on historical facts and evidence.”
  • Jaiswal further said that the Lipulekh Pass has been a long-standing route for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra since 1954 and that pilgrims have been travelling through this route for decades. He added that this is not a new development.
  • In his post on X, Mr. Jaiswal also stated that India remains open to constructive interaction with Nepal on all matters related to bilateral relations, including resolving agreed outstanding boundary issues through dialogue and diplomacy.
  • The latest development has come at a time when Indian and Nepali diplomats have been holding consultations for the past three months on the future course of bilateral relations, and Mr. Misri’s Kathmandu visit was being planned as part of those efforts.
  • Following existing diplomatic practices, Mr. Misri had earlier met the then Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli in August 2025, only a few days before Mr. Oli was removed from power in a youth-led uprising on September 8.
