Congress Offers Support to TVK on One Condition

  • The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, on Tuesday contacted the Congress and the CPI(M), which are part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, and asked for their support to form the government in Tamil Nadu.
  • The TVK became the single largest party in the Assembly election by winning 108 seats, but it still did not get the simple majority needed in the 234-member Assembly.
  • After holding an online meeting with its office-bearers, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) said it was ready to support the TVK, but only if the party did not take support from the lone BJP MLA-designate or from any BJP alliance partners.
  • The Congress party won five seats in the election.
  • In New Delhi, All India Congress Committee general secretary C. Venugopal confirmed that the TVK had officially asked the Congress for support.
  • Venugopal said the Congress believes that the people of Tamil Nadu have given a mandate for a secular government that will protect the Constitution in both letter and spirit.
  • He also said the Congress is fully determined not to allow the BJP or any party working on its behalf to run the Tamil Nadu government.
  • According to him, the Congress leadership instructed the TNCC to take a final decision on Vijay’s request after keeping in mind the feelings and verdict given by the people of the State in the election.
  • Venugopal made these comments after a meeting held to discuss the political situation in Tamil Nadu.
  • The meeting included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu Girish Chodankar, and other party leaders.
  • It is still not clear whether the Congress will only give outside support to the TVK or will itself become part of the government.
  • Since Vijay was elected from two constituencies — Perambur and Tiruchi East — he will have to leave one seat.
  • Because of this resignation, the TVK’s strength in the Assembly will come down from 108 MLAs to 107 MLAs.
  • This will also reduce the total strength of the Assembly from 234 to 233 members.
  • Even if the Congress with its five MLAs supports the TVK, the party will still need the support of five more MLAs to cross the majority mark.
  • The TVK also contacted the CPI(M), which won two seats in the election, and asked for support through party MP Venkatesan.
  • CPI(M) State secretary Shanmugam said that TVK strategist Jhon Arokiasamy contacted Mr. Venkatesan on Tuesday regarding support.
  • However, Mr. Shanmugam clarified that only the CPI(M)’s State committee has the authority to take the final decision on this matter.
  • He also said that the CPI(M) State committee meeting is scheduled to be held on Friday.
  • According to sources, Vijay and senior TVK leaders have also asked for an appointment with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and are expected to meet him on Wednesday.

Mamata says she will not resign, calls it a forced attempt to bring down her government

  • A day after the Trinamool Congress faced a massive defeat in the West Bengal Assembly election, party chief Mamata Banerjee said on Tuesday that she would not resign as Chief Minister because, according to her, “we did not lose the election.”
  • She said the question of resignation does not arise because the party had not actually lost the election.
  • Mamata Banerjee claimed that there was a forceful attempt to defeat her party.
  • She said that officially, through the Election Commission, her party may have lost, but morally the Trinamool Congress had won the election.
  • While speaking at a press conference at her residence, which was her first media interaction after the election defeat, she repeatedly criticised the Election Commission.
  • She said that the real fight was not against the BJP but against the Election Commission.
  • Mamata Banerjee also alleged that the State had been forcibly captured.
  • In the election results counted on Monday, the BJP won 207 out of the 293 Assembly seats, while the Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats.
  • Mamata Banerjee also lost the Bhabanipur constituency election to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.
  • She had taken oath as Chief Minister for a third term on May 5, 2021, and her five-year term officially ended on Tuesday night.
  • Sources at Lok Bhavan in Kolkata said there was no issue in the formation of a new government and that it is only a normal practice for the outgoing Chief Minister to submit a resignation.
  • Experts said that whether a Chief Minister formally resigns or not after the term ends makes very little difference.
  • Jawhar Sircar, former Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, said that once the government’s term ends, everything automatically becomes null and void.
  • He explained that after the term is over, positions like the Chief Minister and Ministers no longer hold value even if they do not officially resign.

Iran Truce Holds Despite New Attacks, Says U.S.

  • S. military leaders said on Tuesday that the ceasefire with Iran is still continuing, even after Iran was blamed for fresh attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and against the UAE a day earlier.
  • The ceasefire, which was reached nearly a month ago, still appeared to be continuing as U.S. forces continued efforts to reopen the important waterway used for global energy trade.
  • On Monday, the U.S. claimed that it had sunk six small Iranian boats that were threatening commercial ships in the region.
  • Till now, only two merchant ships have used the new U.S.-protected route, while hundreds of other ships are still stuck in the Persian Gulf.
  • The UAE, which is a major ally of the United States, said it was attacked by Iranian missiles and drones for the second straight day on Tuesday.
  • At least three people were injured in the attacks that happened a day earlier, and a drone strike also caused a fire at a major oil facility in Fujairah.
  • S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and top U.S. military officer Gen. Dan Caine said that Iran’s latest aggressive actions had still not crossed the level that would lead to “major combat operations.”
  • Caine also said that Tuesday had been a “quieter” day in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Pete Hegseth clearly said that the ceasefire is still active and stated, “No, the ceasefire is not over.”
  • Iran, however, said that the new U.S. efforts in the region are against the ceasefire agreement.
  • Iran’s Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused the United States of weakening regional security.
  • In a post on X, Ghalibaf indicated that Iran has not yet fully reacted to the U.S. move to reopen the waterway.
  • He stated, “We know very well that the continuation of the current situation is intolerable for America; while we have not even begun yet.”
  • Rejecting the U.S. claim that six Iranian boats were sunk, an Iranian military commander said that two small civilian cargo boats were hit on Monday, causing the deaths of five civilians, according to Iranian state television.
  • Caine said that since the ceasefire was announced, Iran has fired at commercial ships nine times, seized two container ships, and attacked U.S. forces more than ten times.
  • He also added that all these actions are still below the level that would restart major combat operations at this stage.
