Modi praises Trump’s comments on ‘special’ ties

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India and the U.S. have a “very positive and forward-looking” relationship. This is his first clear statement after the two countries faced problems over trade, tariffs, and Operation Sindoor.
  • Modi was replying to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent words. Trump praised the India-U.S. friendship, calling it “special.” Modi responded on X (formerly Twitter), saying he “deeply appreciated and fully reciprocated” the remarks.
  • Even though Modi and Trump had a warm meeting in February, things changed later. Their last phone call was on June 17, shortly before the U.S. imposed 25% tariffs on Indian goods and penalized India for purchasing oil from Russia.
  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who will soon travel to the U.S. for the UN General Assembly (UNGA), confirmed that India is still “engaged” with Washington. He said that despite trade problems, India is continuing talks.
  • During a 90-minute press conference, Trump took back his earlier angry post on social media where he had said the U.S. “lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China.”
  • Trump said he was not thrilled about India buying oil from Russia. He said India was facing “very big” 50% tariffs but at the same time, he called Modi a “great Prime Minister” and stressed that their friendship remains strong.
  • Trump also explained that even though India and the U.S. argue sometimes about oil and trade, the relationship is still special. He assured that there is “nothing to worry about” for the long-term partnership.
  • He also stressed that India and the U.S. have a “positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership”.
  • Jaishankar added that Modi and Trump have a “good personal equation”. He explained that Modi gives “enormous importance” to U.S. relations and that India will keep working with Washington through diplomacy.
  • Experts are watching the situation carefully, especially since U.S. negotiators canceled their late August visit to India, which has added uncertainty before Jaishankar’s UNGA trip on September 27.
  • It is not yet clear if Jaishankar will also stop in Washington for direct talks. If he does, it could help break the deadlock and open discussions on the upcoming Quad Summit to be hosted by India.
  • Meanwhile, Trump signed an executive order giving zero tariffs on some products from countries that have trade agreements with the U.S. He also promised concessions for future agreements, but he did not mention India specifically.
  • Over the past months, Trump has praised Modi and India many times, but he has also complained about tariffs, India’s Russian oil imports, and claimed that he helped mediate the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May.
  • This was the first time Modi publicly reacted to Trump’s comments. It could be seen as a small thaw or pause in hostilities after weeks of harsh words and policy clashes.
  • Earlier, tensions increased due to comments made by Trump’s officials. Advisor Peter Navarro attacked Modi’s Russia-China meeting, even blaming him for the Ukraine war by calling it “Modi’s war”. At the same time, the U.S. Commerce Secretary demanded that India should apologize.

Voter fraud probe in Karnataka halted as EC holds back details

  • The inquiry into voter fraud in Karnataka’s Aland constituency has slowed down because the Election Commission has not shared the important data that is needed for progress.
  • The suspected fraud was noticed before the May 2023 Assembly elections. Although the votes were safe, the inquiry has dragged on for more than two years without results.
  • The Karnataka CID has repeatedly requested specific data from the Election Commission to help identify the culprits. But so far, the Election Commission has not replied with the full details.
  • The case was first registered in February 2023, even before Congress started its recent ‘vote chori’ campaign. Many people see this as one of the biggest examples of election malpractice in the state.
  • In Aland, unknown persons sent forged applications to delete thousands of voters’ names from the list. These applications falsely said that the voters had shifted their homes, and they used the details of innocent people without their knowledge.
  • Congress leader B.R. Patil complained to the officials. After checking, it was found that out of 6,018 applications (Form 7), only 24 were real. The other 5,994 applications were fake.
  • Based on a complaint by Mamata Devi, who was then Assistant Commissioner of Kalaburagi district, the Aland police registered a case. The case was later assigned to the Karnataka CID.
  • In 2023, the Election Commission had given some data like IP logs, but they did not share the destination IPs and ports. These details are necessary to track the devices from where the fraud started.

CoWIN portal down since August, blocking certificates

  • The CoWIN portal, which is jointly managed by the Union and State governments and has records of more than two billion COVID-19 vaccine doses, has been down since early August.
  • Because of this, people are unable to access their vaccination certificates. Officials admitted on August 23 that they knew about the problem and promised a quick fix. However, the problem still remained unresolved even after several weeks.
  • CoWIN vaccination certificates played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic. They were needed for travel, job applications, and other official purposes. The platform was once shown as a symbol of India’s success in digital governance.
  • Even though certificates are not as necessary today because almost everyone has at least one vaccine dose, many people still need them for travel or jobs.
  • For example, Bengaluru resident Sohail Marakkar complained on social media that he could not download his vaccination certificate. He needed it urgently for visa processing and international travel. DigiLocker, which normally allows access to certificates, also failed to provide it, making things worse.
  • A senior Health Ministry official said the issue would be fixed by Monday and assured, “Team is at it.” But by Saturday, the problem was still not solved, leaving people frustrated.
  • CoWIN, owned by the Union Health Ministry, was the backbone of India’s vaccination program, handling everything from registration, scheduling, and verification to immunization records, vaccination certificates, cold chain management, and feedback or side effect reporting.
  • The platform was integrated with eight vaccines, including Covishield, Covaxin, Corbevax, and Sputnik-V. In 2021, India shared CoWIN with the world as a public digital tool.
  • Suranjit Chatterjee, a senior doctor at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi, said there is very little demand for COVID vaccines now. He gets just one or two requests these days, showing how interest has dropped sharply.
  • The World Health Organization’s most recent report (for July 21–August 17) recorded 71,687 new COVID cases in 87 countries. This number is less than the 92,519 cases reported in the earlier period.
