 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Quench (verb)

Meaning: extinguish (a fire). (बुझाना)

Synonyms: extinguish, put out, snuff out

Antonyms: fire, ignite, inflame

Sentence: Firemen hauled on hoses in a desperate bid to quench the flames.

  1. Covet (verb)

Meaning: yearn to possess or have (something). (लालच)

Synonyms: desire, crave, want

Antonyms: abhor, abominate, despise

Sentence: It is a sin to covet.

  1. Unnerve (verb)

Meaning: make (someone) lose courage or confidence. (असमर्थ करना)

Synonyms: demoralize, discourage, dishearten

Antonyms: fortify, strengthen, embolden

Sentence: The journey over the bridge had unnerved me.

  1. Defiance (noun)

Meaning: open resistance; bold disobedience. (अवज्ञा)

Synonyms: resistance, opposition, confrontation

Antonyms: compliance, obedience, submission

Sentence: The demonstration was held in defiance of official warnings.

  1. Accentuate (verb)

Meaning: make more noticeable or prominent. (ध्यान आकर्षित करना)

Synonyms: focus attention on, draw attention to, highlight

Antonyms: underemphasize, understate, belittle

Sentence: The photograph seemed to accentuate his large nose.

  1. Pander (verb)

Meaning: gratify or indulge (an immoral or distasteful desire, need, or habit or a person with such a desire, etc.). (बढ़ावा देना)

Synonyms: indulge, gratify, satisfy

Sentence: Don’t pander to such people.

  1. Eulogy (noun)

Meaning: a speech or piece of writing that praises someone or something highly, typically someone who has just died. (प्रशंसा भाषण)

Synonyms: accolade, a speech of praise, panegyric

Antonyms: censure, condemnation, denunciation

Sentence: The minister delivered a long eulogy.

  1. Moiety (noun)

Meaning: each of two parts into which a thing is or can be divided. (आधा भाग)

Synonyms: half, moiety, part

Antonyms: entirety, whole, full

Sentence: The tax was to be delivered in two moieties.

  1. Predispose (noun)

Meaning: make someone liable or inclined to a specified attitude, action, or condition. (संभावना अधिक होती है)

Synonyms: make susceptible, make liable, make prone

Sentence: His good manners predispose people to like him.

  1. Proclivity (noun)

Meaning: a tendency to choose or do something regularly; an inclination or predisposition toward a particular thing. (झुकाव)

Synonyms: tendency, leaning, propensity

Antonyms: aversion, disfavor, disinclination

Sentence: The child showed no proclivity towards aggression.
