The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  16th January 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Tainting (verb)

Meaning: contaminate or pollute (something). (दूषित)

Synonyms: contaminate, pollute, befouling

Antonyms: decontaminating, purifying, filtering

Sentence: Smog has long tainted the air of the city, making it difficult to breathe.

  1. Blight (noun)

Meaning: something that spoils the appearance or completeness of a thing (बिगाड़ देना)

Synonyms: blemish, blotch, defect

Antonyms: adornment, decoration, embellishment

Sentence: The expanding urban sprawl is a blight on the countryside.

  1. Confederacies (noun)

Meaning: a league or alliance, especially of confederate states. (संघ)

Synonyms: federation, confederation, alliance

Sentence: The Italian confederacy was known as the Lombard League.

  1. Licit (adj.)

Meaning: not forbidden; lawful. (जायज)

Synonyms: legitimate, permissible, admissible

Antonyms: illegal, illegitimate, illicit

Sentence: She made some money by licit means.

  1. Persiflage (noun)

Meaning: light and slightly contemptuous mockery or banter. (ताना)

Synonyms: badinage, raillery, banter

Sentence: The persiflage is not appropriate when we are discussing such serious problems.

  1. Prolix (adj.)

Meaning: (of speech or writing) using or containing too many words; tediously lengthy. (अति विस्‍तृत)

Synonyms: lengthy, long-winded, verbose

Antonyms: concise, compact, brief

Sentence: The author’s prolix style has done nothing to encourage sales of the book.

  1. Fickle (adj.)

Meaning: changing frequently, especially as regards one’s loyalties, interests, or affection. (अस्थिर)

Synonyms: capricious, changeable, variable

Antonyms: constant, certain, unchanging

Sentence: Fortune is fickle.

  1. Helmsmanship (noun)

Meaning: the ability to make good judgments and quick decisions, typically in a particular domain. (कुशाग्रता)

Synonyms: astuteness, acumen, acuity

Antonyms: stupidity, foolishness, witlessness

Sentence: Clinton’s helmsmanship for the past four years left a lot to be desired

  1. Nonentity (noun)

Meaning: a person or thing with no special or interesting qualities; an unimportant person or thing. (महत्वहीन व्यक्ति)

Synonyms: unimportant person, person of no importance, nobody

Antonyms: personage, somebody, eminence

Sentence: How could such a nonentity become chairman of the company?

  1. Disingenuous (adj.)

Meaning: not candid or sincere, typically by pretending to know less about something than one really does. (कपटी)

Synonyms: dishonest, deceitful, underhand

Antonyms: honest, sincere, genuine

Sentence: He was being somewhat disingenuous as well as cynical.
