‘Vocabulary’

  1. Obviate (verb)

Meaning: remove (a need or difficulty). (मुक्त हो जाना)

Synonyms: preclude, prevent, remove

Sentence: A peaceful solution would obviate the need to send a UN military force.

  1. Nonchalance (noun)

Meaning: the state of being nonchalant. (विरक्ति)

Synonyms: calmness, coolness, insouciance

Antonyms: concern, interest, regard

Sentence: He conceals his worries behind a mask of nonchalance.

  1. Parsimony (noun)

Meaning: extreme unwillingness to spend money or use resources. (बचत)

Synonyms: meanness, miserliness, parsimoniousness

Antonyms: diseconomy, wastefulness, lavishness

Sentence: Due to official parsimony, only one machine was built.

  1. Didactic (adj.)

Meaning: intended to teach, particularly in having moral instruction as an ulterior motive. (शिक्षाप्रद)

Synonyms: instructive, instructional, educational

Antonyms: erroneous, pernicious, misleading

Sentence: A didactic novel that set out to expose social injustice.

  1. Incertitude (noun)

Meaning: a state of uncertainty or hesitation. (शक)

Synonyms: disbelief, incredulity, unbelief

Antonyms: assurance, belief, certainty

Sentence: Some schools broke down under the stresses of policy incertitude

  1. Ticklish (adj.)

Meaning: (of a situation or problem) difficult to deal with; requiring careful handling. (मुश्किल)

Synonyms: problematic, tricky, delicate

Antonyms: easy, simple, uncomplicated

Sentence: Handling awkward neighbours can be a ticklish business.

  1. Sever (verb)

Meaning: divide by cutting or slicing, especially suddenly and forcibly. (अलग करना)

Synonyms: cut off, chop off, lop off

Antonyms: join, link, unite

Sentence: She wanted to sever all her connections with the firm.

  1. Finesse (noun)

Meaning: intricate and refined delicacy. (चालाकी)

Synonyms: skill, subtlety, expertise

Antonyms: inadequacy, incompetence, ineptitude

Sentence: He is a true believer, but sadly lacks finesse.

  1. Unappetizing (adj.)

Meaning: not inviting or attractive; unwholesome. (न मजेदार)

Synonyms: unpalatable, unpleasant, unappealing

Antonyms: appetizing, delicious, delish

Sentence: The soup was cold and unappetizing, but it was all there was.

  1. Promiscuity (noun)

Meaning: the fact or state of being promiscuous. (संकीर्णता)

Synonyms: licence, licentiousness, promiscuousness

Antonyms: fidelity, allegiance, constancy

Sentence: Although most birds are monogamous, promiscuity is not unusual among brood parasites.
