 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Elide (verb)

Meaning: to make less in extent or duration (काटना)

Synonyms: abridge, curtail, shorten

Antonyms: elongate, extend, lengthen

Sentence: The product presentation was not elided—it’s always only 15 minutes long.

  1. Dilatory (adj.)

Meaning: slow to act. (धीमा)

Synonyms: slow, unhurried, tardy

Antonyms: expeditious, accelerated, hastened

Sentence: The Government has been dilatory in condemning the outrage.

  1. Fitful (adj.)

Meaning: active or occurring spasmodically or intermittently; not regular or steady. (अस्थिर)

Synonyms: intermittent, sporadic, spasmodic

Antonyms: constant, continuous, regular

Sentence: It was a cool day with fitful sunshine.

  1. Weasel (adj.)

Meaning: a deceitful or treacherous person. (चालक आदमी)

Synonyms: scoundrel, wretch, serpent

Antonyms: innocent, saint

Sentence: He was a double-crossing weasel.

  1. Impresario (noun)

Meaning: a person who organizes and often finances concerts, plays, or operas. (आयोजक)

Synonyms: organizer, manager, producer

Sentence: It was the actor’s dream to work under the renowned impresario.

  1. Whiff (noun)

Meaning: an almost imperceptible sign of something (एहसास)

Synonyms: flicker, glimmer, hint

Antonyms: permeation, pervasion, saturation

Sentence: Even a whiff of appreciation for everything I’ve done for her would have been nice.

  1. Alibis (noun)

Meaning: an explanation that frees one from fault or blame (बहाना)

Synonyms: apologies, reasons, excuses

Sentence: Those students always have a very creative alibi for undone homework.

  1. Propensity (noun)

Meaning: an inclination or natural tendency to behave in a particular way. (प्रवृत्ति)

Synonyms: tendency, ability, inclination

Antonyms: disinclination, dislike, inability

Sentence: Men have a slightly increased propensity towards baldness.

  1. Smidgen (noun)

Meaning: a small amount of something. (थोड़ा)

Synonyms: ace, bit, driblet

Antonyms: abundance, barrel, boatload

Sentence: Could I have a smidgen more wine?

  1. Recrimination (noun)

Meaning: an accusation in response to one from someone else. (अभियोग)

Synonyms: incrimination, charge, complaint

Sentence: Let’s not indulge in recrimination.
