‘Vocabulary’
- Damp (adj.)
Meaning: slightly wet (नम)
Synonyms: moist, humid, wet
Antonyms: dry, drench, arid
Sentence: Her hair was still damp from the shower.
- Laggard (noun)
Meaning: a person who makes slow progress and falls behind others (सुस्त)
Synonyms: straggler, loiterer, lingerer
Antonyms: hurried, cosmopolitan, accelerate
Sentence: There was no time for laggards.
- Ambiguity (noun)
Meaning: the quality of being open to more than one interpretation; inexactness (अस्पष्टता)
Synonyms: ambivalence, equivocation, obscurity
Antonyms: clarity, clearness. definiteness.
Sentence: We can detect no ambiguity in this section of the Act.
- Precarious (adj.)
Meaning: not securely held or in position; dangerously likely to fall or collapse (अनिश्चित)
Synonyms: uncertain, doubtful, dubious
Antonyms: certain, constant, constant
Sentence: The museum is in a financially precarious position.
- Elicit (verb)
Meaning: evoke or draw out (a response, answer, or fact) from someone in reaction to one’s own actions or questions (प्रकाश में लाना/प्राप्त करना)
Synonyms: obtain, bring out, draw out
Antonyms: keep, abduct, append
Sentence: I could elicit no response from him.
- Derogation (noun)
Meaning: the perception or treatment of someone or something as being of little worth (अनादर)
Synonyms: dishonour, disrespect, insult
Antonyms: ennoblement, honour, glorification
Sentence: He could not tolerate the derogation of his father.
- Reassert (verb)
Meaning: to prove; confirm (साबित करना/ पुष्टि करना)
Synonyms: reaffirm, affirm, allege
Antonyms: disclaim, reject, abandon
Sentence: The Prime Minister aimed to reassert his authority.
- Stern (adj.)
Meaning: (of a person or their manner) serious and unrelenting, especially in the assertion of authority and exercise of discipline (कठोर)
Synonyms: serious, unsmiling, frowning
Antonyms: kind, gentle, lenient
Sentence: His voice was stern again.
- Applaud (verb)
Meaning: show approval or praise by clapping (प्रशंसा करना)
Synonyms: clap, cheer, whistle
Antonyms: belittle, blame, jeer
Sentence: The crowd whistled and applauded.
- Havoc (noun)
Meaning: widespread destruction (नाश)
Synonyms: devastation, destruction, damage
Antonyms: calm, peace, concord
Sentence: On the 16th of March 1889, the heavy tidal waves created havoc in the harbor of Apia.
