‘Vocabulary’
- Verdant (adj.)
Meaning: (of countryside) green with grass or other rich vegetation. (हरा भरा)
Synonyms: green, leafy, grassy
Antonyms: barren, leafless
Sentence: Much of the region’s verdant countryside has been destroyed in the hurricane.
- Obsolete (adj.)
Meaning: no longer produced or used; out of date. (पुराना)
Synonyms: out of date, outdated, outmoded
Antonyms: new-fashioned, modern, recent
Sentence: Gas lamps became obsolete when electric lighting was invented.
- Emaciation (noun)
Meaning: the state of being abnormally thin or weak. (दुर्बलता)
Synonyms: thinness, scragginess, weakness
Antonyms: convalesce, gain, recover
Sentence: These photographs show extremes of obesity and emaciation.
- Spearheaded (verb)
Meaning: to serve as leader of (नेतृत्व करना)
Synonyms: captained, commanded, headed
Antonyms: bowed (to), followed, deferred
Sentence: Unofficially at least, Luther spearheaded the civil rights movement.
- Ruffians (noun)
Meaning: a violent person, especially one involved in crime. (बदमाश)
Synonyms: thug, roughneck, scoundrel
Antonyms: moral, decent, virtuous
Sentence: A gang of ruffians preying upon people who ventured into that section of town.
- Accretion (noun)
Meaning: the process of growth or increase, typically by the gradual accumulation of additional layers or matter. (एक साथ वृद्धि)
Synonyms: accrual, boost, addition
Antonyms: abatement, decline, decrease
Sentence: The fund was increased by the accretion of new shareholders.
- Horrendous (adj.)
Meaning: extremely unpleasant, horrifying, or terrible. (खराब)
Synonyms: direful, dreadful, fearful
Antonyms: calming, comforting, consoling
Sentence: He described it as the most horrendous experience of his life.
- Immured (verb)
Meaning: enclose or confine (someone) against their will. (क़ैद करना)
Synonyms: caged, imprisoned, enclosed
Antonyms: free, loose, unbound
Sentence: He was immured in a dark room.
- Chutzpah (noun)
Meaning: extreme self-confidence or audacity. (धृष्टता)
Synonyms: audacity, cheek, guts
Antonyms: bashfulness, diffidence, hesitancy
Sentence: It took a lot of chutzpah to talk to your boss like that.
- Idyll (noun)
Meaning: an extremely happy, peaceful, or picturesque episode or scene, typically an idealized or unsustainable one. (सुखद जीवन)
Synonyms: wonderful time, moment of bliss, heaven
Sentence: His year as a vineyard worker in the south of France was not the idyll that he had expected it to be.
