The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  2nd January 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Plunge (verb)

Meaning: jump or dive quickly and energetically. (डुबाना)

Synonyms: sink, dive, jump

Antonyms: emerge, sore, rescue

Sentence: Our daughters whooped as they plunged into the sea.

  1. Blasphemy (noun)

Meaning: the act or offense of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk. (ईश – निंदा)

Synonyms: profanity, profaneness, sacrilege

Antonyms: adoration, glorification, worship

Sentence: He was detained on charges of blasphemy.

  1. Deride (verb)

Meaning: express contempt for; ridicule. (उपहास करना)

Synonyms: make fun of, poke fun at, laugh at

Antonyms: applaud, respect, praise

Sentence: You shouldn’t deride their efforts.

  1. Cryptic (adj.)

Meaning: having a meaning that is mysterious or obscure. (गुप्त)

Synonyms: enigmatic, mysterious, hard to understand

Antonyms: understandable, apparent, clear

Sentence: He found his boss’s utterances too cryptic.

  1. Elucidated (verb)

Meaning: make (something) clear; explain. (स्पष्ट)

Synonyms: explain, make clear, clarify

Antonyms: obscured, confused, obfuscated

Sentence: Work such as theirs will help to elucidate this matter.

  1. Adroit (adj.)

Meaning: clever or skillful in using the hands or mind. (निपुण)

Synonyms: skillful, adept, dexterous

Antonyms: amateur, unprofessional, unskillful

Sentence: He was adroit at tax avoidance.

  1. Oblivious (adj.)

Meaning: not being aware of or not concerned about what is happening around one. (बेख़बर)

Synonyms: unaware, unconscious, heedless

Antonyms: aware, cognizant, conscious

Sentence: She became absorbed, oblivious to the passage of time.

  1. Emanate (verb)

Meaning: (of something abstract but perceptible) issue or spread out from (a source). (निकालना)

Synonyms: emerge, flow, pour

Antonyms: absorb, go away

Sentence: Waves emanate from the same atom source.

  1. Prelude (noun)

Meaning: an action or event serving as an introduction to something more important. (प्रस्तावना)

Synonyms: preliminary, overture, opening

Antonyms: aftermath, closing, conclusion

Sentence: Education cannot simply be a prelude to a career.

  1. Largesse (noun)

Meaning: generosity in bestowing money or gifts upon others. (उदारता)

Synonyms: generosity, liberality, munificence

Antonyms: cheapness, parsimony, penuriousness

Sentence: She is not noted for her largesse.
