‘Vocabulary’
- Parlance (noun)
Meaning: a particular way of speaking or using words, especially a way common to those with a particular job or interest. (बोल-चाल)
Synonyms: jargon, language, phraseology
Sentence: In military parlance, this is known as a fast retreat.
- Aver (verb)
Meaning: state or assert to be the case. (दृढ़ता से कहना)
Synonyms: declare, assert, state
Antonyms: deny, gainsay
Sentence: I aver that I have spoken the truth.
- Belied (verb)
Meaning: to prove to be false (झुठलाना)
Synonyms: confounded, confuted, debunked
Antonyms: confirmed, validated, proved
Sentence: The latest information belies the old theory.
- Banal (adj.)
Meaning: so lacking in originality as to be obvious and boring. (मामूली)
Synonyms: trite, boring, monotonous
Antonyms: piquant, poignant, thrilling
Sentence: Unlike their early work, the band’s latest offering is banal and uninspiring.
- Genteel (adj.)
Meaning: polite, refined, or respectable, often in an affected or ostentatious way. (ललित)
Synonyms: refined, respectable, decent
Antonyms: uncivilized, ungenteel, indecorous
Sentence: She always talks in such a genteel voice when she’s on the phone.
- Idiosyncrasy (noun)
Meaning: a mode of behavior or way of thought peculiar to an individual. (लत)
Synonyms: crotchet, affectation, habit
Sentence: Eating no meat was Amy’s idiosyncrasy.
- Convalesce (verb)
Meaning: recover one’s health and strength over a period of time after an illness or operation. (अच्छा हो जाना)
Synonyms: recuperate, get better, recover
Antonyms: ail, collapse, sicken
Sentence: She went to the seaside to convalesce after her stay in hospital.
- Trove (noun)
Meaning: a store of valuable or delightful things. (भंडार)
Synonyms: assortment, treasure, assemble
Antonyms: ragbag, clutter
Sentence: The dictionary is a vast treasure trove of information.
- Commiserated (verb)
Meaning: express or feel sympathy or pity; sympathize. (हमदर्दी रखना)
Synonyms: offer sympathy to, feel pity for, condole with
Antonyms: distressed, tormented, irritated
Sentence: They commiserated the misfortune of their teacher.
- Dutiful (adj.)
Meaning: conscientiously or obediently fulfilling one’s duty. (कर्त्तव्य परायण)
Synonyms: conscientious, responsible, dedicated
Antonyms: undutiful, discourteous, insolent
Sentence: She was a complaisant wife and dutiful daughter.
