‘Vocabulary’
- Putative (adj.)
Meaning: Appearing to be true on the basis of evidence that may or may not be confirmed (कथित)
Synonyms: alleged, reputed, ostensible
Antonyms: real, inapparent, implausible
Sentence: The putative leader of the terrorist organization was arrested by police in Birmingham yesterday.
- Scabrous (adj.)
Meaning: Covered with raised, roughened, or unwholesome patches (खुरदरा)
Synonyms: rugged, knobby, jagged
Antonyms: smooth, regular, even
Sentence: Her face buried itself in his scabrous shirt.
- Edifice (noun)
Meaning: a large, magnificent, or massive building (भवन)
Synonyms: tower, monument, palace
Sentence: The U.S. Capitol is one of our nation’s most impressive edifices
- Obloquy (noun)
Meaning: Harsh insulting language (अपमान)
Synonyms: abuse, insult, vituperation
Antonyms: praise, acclaim, applause
Sentence: I resent the obloquy that you are casting upon my reputation.
- Crimp (noun)
Meaning: A small fold in a soft and otherwise smooth surface (मोडना)
Synonyms: furrow, crease, wrinkle
Sentence: Because of the cold, he crimps his legs
- Supine (adj.)
Meaning: lacking the ability or will to act on one’s own (लापरवाह)
Synonyms: passive, feeble, incompetent
Antonyms: defiant, recalcitrant, competent
Sentence: They blamed the disaster on supine politicians who allowed large corporations to float regulations.
- Gainsay (verb)
Meaning: to make an assertion that is contrary to one made by (another) (विरोध करना)
Synonyms: contradict, refute, disagree
Antonyms: agree, verify, confirm
Sentence: Mr Smith’s survival techniques are sound, and I cannot imagine that any accountant would gainsay them.
- Lassitude (noun)
Meaning: A complete depletion of energy or strength (सुस्ती)
Synonyms: exhaustion, fatigue, weariness
Antonyms: Vigor, refreshment, energy
Sentence: Our lassitude was such that we couldn’t even be bothered to get more soda from the fridge
- Resemblance (noun)
Meaning: the quality or state of having many qualities in common (उपमान)
Synonyms: similarity, likeness, comparability
Antonyms: difference, dissimilarity, unlikeness
Sentence: The look of the director’s latest film bears a strong resemblance to the look of his last film
- Outlawed (verb)
Meaning: to make or declare contrary to the law (गैरकानूनी घोषित)
Synonyms: banned, criminalized, prohibited
Antonyms: permitted, legalized, allowed
Sentence: In 1975 gambling was outlawed.
