  • In Madhya Pradesh, the Chief Minister Kamal Nath will inaugurate the 7-Day International Film Festival in Shilpkala village of Khajuraho on 17th
  • Films from the country and abroad including Bundelkhandi will be screened at the Tapra Talkies made for the festival.
  • The International Khajuraho Film Festival is being organized by the Prayas Sanstha in collaboration with the State Government.

India slips to 112th place on gender gap

  • India has slipped four places to rank 112th globally in terms of gender gap amid widening disparity in terms of women’s health and survival and economic participation — the two areas where the country is now ranked in the bottom-five, an annual survey.
  • While Iceland remains the world’s most gender-neutral country, India has moved down the ladder from its 108th position last year on the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Report to rank below countries like China (106th), Sri Lanka (102nd), Nepal (101st), Brazil (92nd), Indonesia (85th) and Bangladesh (50th).
  • Yemen is ranked the worst (153rd), while Iraq is 152nd and Pakistan 151st.

  • The Tansen Music Festival or the Tansen Sangeet Sammelan or the Tansen Utsav is held every year in order to celebrate the memory of one of the greatest artists in Indian history, Tansen. Tansen was one of the nine gems in the court of one of the greatest Mughal rulers of India, Emperor Akbar.

Pervez Musharraf sentenced to death by Pakistan court for high treason

  • Pakistan’s former dictator General Pervez Musharraf was on 16th December sentenced to death in absentia in the high treason case for subverting the Constitution in 2007, becoming the first military ruler to receive the capital punishment in the country’s history.
  • A three-member bench of the special court, headed by Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth, pronounced the verdict in the landmark case launched in 2013 against the former Pakistan Army chief by the previous government of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
  • The court found the ailing 76-year-old ex-president, now living in Dubai on self-exile.

ADB, India sign $250 million loan to expand energy efficiency investments in India

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India on 16th December 2019 signed a $250 million loan.
  • Purpose: Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to expand energy efficiency investments in India that will benefit agricultural, residential and institutional consumers.
  • In addition, $46 million financing will be provided from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF), to be administered by ADB.
  • ADB previously approved a $200 million loan to EESL, a public sector energy service company, in 2016 for Demand Side Energy Efficiency Sector Project that focused on efficient lighting and appliances.

India, Germany ink pact for Rs 1,958 crore finance to develop energy-efficient housing programme

  • India has secured a USD 277 million (about Rs 1,900 crore) loan from Germany to establish an energy-efficient housing programme in the country.
  • A loan agreement has been signed between State Bank of India and German development bank KfW for USD 277 million to establish an energy-efficient housing programme in India
  • The programme shall be part of the Indo-German Development Co-operation, guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • “Under the programme, both builders and homebuyers shall be financed for developing/purchasing energy-efficient residential projects that achieve at least 25 per cent energy savings in comparison to standard reference buildings.

RIL beat Indian Oil to be number one player by revenue in the Fortune India 500 list for 2019

  • Reliance Industries (RIL) has emerged as the number one company in terms of revenue in the Fortune India 500 list for 2019, pipping Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). RIL revenues crossed Rs 5.81 trillion in FY19 against IOC’s Rs 5.36 trillion.
  • Since it was first published in 2010, IOC has been topping the list.
  • RIL’s race to the top was powered by consumer-facing businesses like organised retail and telecom.
  • In terms of profits too, RIL’s FY19 net profit was ahead at Rs 39,588 crore against IOC’s Rs 17,377 crore.

  • Supersonic cruise missile BrahMos was successfully test-fired from a base in Odisha’s Chandipur.
  • The land-attack version of the missile was test-fired from a mobile autonomous launcher at Launch Complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur. The trial of the surface-to-surface missile was successful, meeting all the parameters.
  • The BrahMos missile is a medium-range ramjet supersonic cruise missile capable of being launched from submarines, ships, fighter jets or land.
