Union HRD Minister launches Innovation learning programme 'DHRUV'

  • 60 talented students have been selected in the first batch. After the launch, a programme of around 14 days’ duration would be conducted with these students.
  • ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan, Wing Cdr Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to enter space and Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, Prof K Vijay Raghavan were the guests of honour. Addressing the gathering the HRD Minister said that the programme is named after the Pole Star DHRUV and every student is a DHRUV TARA.
  • Purpose: ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan said that the objective of ‘DHRUV’ is to allow talented students realise their full potential and contribute to society.

  • Taking a step forward for a clean environment and making people aware of curbing plastic use, a ‘Garbage Cafe’ has been set up in Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur district by city’s Municipal Corporation.
  • Chhattisgarh Health Minister TS Singhdeo inaugurated the ‘Garbage Cafe’ at Ambikapur which will provide food to citizens in exchange for plastic waste.

Moody’s cuts India’s FY20 growth forecast to 5.8%

  • Moody’s Investors Service on 10th October cut India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast for 2019-20 to 5.8% from the earlier estimate of 6.2%. It attributed the deceleration to an investment-led slowdown that has broadened into consumption, driven by financial stress among rural households and weak job creation.
  • It expects growth to pick up to 6% in FY21 and around 7% over the medium term.

MakeMyTrip announces tie-up with TripAdvisor for outbound travel space

  • MakeMyTrip, an online travel company, announced a sourcing tie-up with travel website TripAdvisor, offering its customers tours and activities in over 100 places abroad.
  • Aims: “Our data shows consistent increase in the number of outbound Indian travellers who are willing to spend more on new and differentiated local experiences. With the roll-out of international experiences with TripAdvisor on our platform, we are confident that we can now empower Indian travellers with more choices when they travel overseas.

Dearness Allowance for govt employees hiked by 5%

  • The Union government hiked the Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees by five per cent from the existing 12 per cent.
  • The DA has now been increased from 12 per cent to 17 per cent. Expected to benefit 50 lakh central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners. Raise would cost the exchequer nearly Rs 16,000 crore.

  • Two winners were named – one for 2019 and one for 2018 – because the prize was not awarded last year.
  • Olga Tokarczuk: Tokarczuk, who also won the Man Booker International Prize last year, was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize,
  • Peter Handke: The 76-year-old Austrian playwright, novelist and poet was recognised for “an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience with this year’s 2019 Nobel going to Handke.
