  • Union Human Resource Development Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched several initiatives of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in New Delhi on18 September.
  • ‘WAWE Summit 2019’ is a great initiative because women have skills in their hands and it will further empower and motivate them. The Minister in formed that the WAWE Summit will be held in November-December 2019. It will be jointly organized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Institute of Waste Management (IIWM) at Jaipur.

♦ Hyderabad-Karnataka region renamed ‘Kalyana Karnataka’

Hyderabad-Karnataka region renamed 'Kalyana Karnataka'

  • Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on 17 September announced that it has been renamed as ‘Kalyana Karnataka’ and a separate secretariat would be established for its development.
  • “It has been a long standing demand to rename Hyderabad-Karnataka as Kalyana Karnataka.
  • CM’s Said I will establish a secretariat for the effective implementation of Article 371(J) of the Constitution [that offers special status to the region in education and employment]. I will open a branch office of the Hyderabad Karnataka Special Cell in Kalaburagi.

Kerala govt inks MoU with Maldives on cancer care

  • Kerala on 16th September inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Maldives to strengthen cancer care in the island nation.
  • The state health department and RCC would also provide support in setting up cancer care centres in Maldives and their doctors, nurses, pharmacists and para medical staff would be provided training at RCC.
  • Maldives has also sought RCC’s support to create a cancer registry in that country.

  • Wing Commander Anjali Singh has become India’s first female military diplomat to be posted in any of the Indian missions abroad. Anjali Singh has joined the Indian Embassy in Russia as the Deputy Air Attache.
  • Anjali Singh, who is trained on MiG-29 fighter aircraft, joined her new assignment on September 10.

Ramkumar Ramamoorthy appointed CMD of Cognizant India

  • Nasdaq listed IT firm Cognizant has elevated Ramkumar Ramamoorthy as chairman and managing director of Cognizant India, and named him head of India operations.
  • Cognizant CEO Brian Humphries in an email to Cognizant employees on September 17, said, “In the weeks ahead, [Mr.] Ramkumar will be establishing both a management committee and an operating committee for India.

Singapore, India and Thailand begin trilateral naval exercise "Maiden SITMEX-19"at Port Blair

  • Singapore, India and Thailand have commenced a trilateral naval exercise at Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The Singapore-India-Thailand Maritime Exercise (SITMEX) is the maiden trilateral exercise involving the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), Indian Navy and the Royal Thai Navy.
  • Hosted by India, the five-day exercise will run 16-20 September.
  • Aim: Help improve maritime relationships and interoperability between the three Asian nations.

Indian Air Force successfully flight tests air-to-air Astra missile from Sukhoi-30 MKI

  • The missile was launched from Su-30 MKI as a part of User trials. “The live aerial target was engaged accurately demonstrating the capability of the first indigenous air-to-air missile.
  • Successfully flight-tested air-to-air missile Astra off the coast of Odisha.

  • Astra is an indigenous Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Astra missile with a range of over 70 km. The missile can fly towards its target at a speed of over 5,555 kilometres per hour. It has a 15-kilogramme high-explosive pre-fragmented warhead.

Vinesh Phogat wins bronze at World Wrestling Championship, qualifies for Tokyo Olympics

  • Indian wrestling Vinesh Phogat secured Tokyo Olympics qualification and won a bronze, while Pooja Dhanda put herself one win away from her second medal at the World Championships.
  • Vinesh finally ended the drought by pinning Maria Prevolaraki to win by fall in the bronze-medal bout.
  • Vinesh is only the fifth Indian woman wrestler to win a Worlds medal after Alka Tomar (2006), Geeta Phogat (2012), Babita Phogat (2012) and Pooja Dhanda (2018).
