♦Chhattisgarh’s CM announces formation of Lemru Elephant Reserve

• Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel announced the formation of ‘Lemru Elephant Reserve’ in Chattisgarh.
• Aimed at minimizing human-elephant conflict and destruction of property in addition to providing a permanent habitat for the wild tuskers.
• Chhattisgarh government, setting up of Lemru Elephant Reserve (LER), spanning over an area of 450 square kilometres.

♦India’s First ‘Virtual Court’ Launched In Faridabad

• Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court, Justice Krishna Murari on 17 august launched the first Virtual Court at Faridabad through video conferencing.
• Aimed at- eliminating presence of litigant in the Court and adjudication of the case online.
• The project has been launched under the guidance of e-Committee of Supreme Court of India and the software has been developed by National Informatics Centre (NIC).

♦MoU between India and Maldives on ‘Training and Capacity Building Programme for Maldivian Civil Servants’

• A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Maldives on ‘Training and Capacity Building Programme for Maldivian Civil Servants’ was operationalised on 19 August.
• Aim-India and the Civil Services Commission of Maldives envisaged capacity building activities for 1000 civil servants of Maldives at the NCGG over the next five years.
• The agreement is part of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy which actively focuses on improving relations with the country’s South Asian neighbours. The policy encourages trade, connectivity and people-to-people contact between India and its neighbours to increase co-operation in the region.

♦CCMB scientist K Thangaraj awarded JC Bose Fellowship

• K. Thangaraj, chief scientist of the city-based CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) has been awarded the prestigious J.C. Bose Fellowship for his outstanding scientific contributions in the field of population and medical genomics.
• Reason- The JC Bose fellowship is awarded to active scientists in recognition of their outstanding performance by the Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

♦20 August-Sadbhavana Diwas

• August 20 every year, Sadbhavana Diwas commemorates the memory of our late erstwhile Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.  He was assassinated in May 1991, while campaigning in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu for the forthcoming national elections.

♦World Mosquito Day 2019

• World Mosquito Day commemorates Sir Ronald Ross’ 1897 discovery of the link between mosquitoes and malaria transmission. The event raises awareness about the threat of malaria and other diseases transmitted by the world’s deadliest animal.

♦Veteran music composer Khayyam passes away

• Veteran composer Khayyam, best known for his music in classic films such as Umrao Jaan and Kabhi Kabhie, passed away after a prolonged illnesses at a hospital here on 19 August. He was 92.
