  • Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways and MSME Shri Nitin Gadkari and Shri Jitendra Singh, MoS (I/C) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space announced renaming of Chenani Nashri Tunnel on NH 44 in Jammu & Kashmir as Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel in an event in New Delhi on 24 October.
  • About Turnal: This 9 km tunnel is the longest such state of art tunnel in the country, connecting Udhampur to Ramban in Jammu.

  • The Global Bio-India 2019, one of the largest biotechnology stakeholders conglomerate will be held for the first time in India at New Delhi from 21st to 23rd November, 2019. Announcing this at a Curtain Raiser in Delhi today, the Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said“India for the first time is hosting a mega event for the biotech community to attract investments, showcase our indigenous strengths and more importantly fuel the hopes and aspirations of the indigenous talent pool”.

"Crime in India-2017", NCRB report

  • The latest annual crime data, “Crime in India-2017”, released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). There was an increase of 3.6 per cent in criminal cases in 2017 compared to 2016.
  • Uttar Pradesh was followed by Maharashtra with 31,979 cases and West Bengal 30,002 cases.
  • Interestingly, Delhi, which came to be known as the rape capital after the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case, saw a decline in crime against women for the third straight year, with 13,076 FIRs being registered in 2017, down from 15,310 in 2016 and 17,222 in 2015.
  • In 2017, Madhya Pradesh registered maximum number of rape cases at 5562, 97.5% of which were committed by known persons. Rajasthan followed next with 3,305 cases out of which 87.9% of the perpetrators were known to the victim. In Maharashtra, 98.1% rape cases were against friends, associates or relatives.

India jumps to 63rd position in World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business 2020 report

  • India has moved 14 places to be 63rd among 190 nations in the World Bank’s ease of doing business ranking.
  • The country was 77th among 190 countries in the previous ranking last year, an improvement by 23 places. The report assess improvement in ease of doing business environment in Delhi and Mumbai.

Govt approves BSNL-MTNL merger, clears Rs 70,000-crore relief package

  • Two public sector telecom behemoths — Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL). While approving a package of nearly Rs 70,000 crore for the two financially stressed entities, the Union Cabinet on 23 October also drew up a timeline to merge them.
  • The relief package includes a sovereign bond issue worth Rs 15,000 crore, to be serviced by the two telcos. Also, BSNL and MTNL will be allotted 4G spectrum at an administered price, pegged at the 2016 auction value. The two firms would be allotted 4G spectrum worth Rs 20,140 crore, Rs 29,937 crore for VRS covering 50 per cent of their employees and Rs 3,674 crore for goods and services tax (GST) that will be levied on allocation of radiowaves.

  • Vreedhi Financial Services (VFS) has secured a non banking finance company licence from the Reserve Bank of India and aims to offer credit and other services to micro enterprises operating in tier two three cities and small towns.
  • Company will create a digital lending model by the next financial year. The company aims to address the gap between the addressable and viable credit in the micro enterprises space.

  • Pine Labs, a merchant-focussed company, announced strengthen its Equated Monthly Instalment (EMI) The company also announced a new addition in its ecosystem of bank partners with the strategic alliance with State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest bank.
  • This partnership will enable SBI to extend EMI facility to its existing debit card customers via Pine Labs’ point-of-sale (POS) machines at 40,000+ merchants and stores in 1,500+ cities.

  • The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Federal Bank to offer a number of services including transfer of funds through GeM Pool Accounts (GPA), advising of Performance Bank Guarantees (e-PBG) and Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) to the registered users on the portal.
  • Benefit: Facilitate a cashless, paperless and transparent payment system on the portal and would create an efficient procurement system for government entities.

  • 32-year-old Indian clinched his second gold by clocking 53.35 seconds in the disabled men’s 400m IT1 event. Colombia’s Teodicelo (58.95) and Ranchin Mickael (1:00.31) took the silver and bronze, respectively.

  • Military exercises, the ‘Sindhu Sudarshan’ in the deserts of Rajasthan from November 29 to December 4 to evaluate the capability of the Defence forces to strike deep into enemy territory in an integrated air-land battle.
  • Sindhu Sudarshan will witness more than 40,000 troops in an all-arms battle array of divisions and brigades carrying out offensive operations in deserts. This will provide the unique opportunity to employ entire mechanised formations consisting of tanks and Infantry Combat Vehicles (ICVs) in order to evaluate the capability to strike deep along Western Borders.
