Parliament passes Aadhaar amendment Bill


  • Parliament on Monday passed an amendment bill which allows voluntary use of Aadhaar as proof of identity for users to open bank accounts and get mobile phone connection.
  • The Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019, was passed by Rajya Sabha by a voice vote.
  • The Bill, which also provides for a stiff ₹1 crore penalty and a jail term for private entities violating provisions on Aadhaar data, was already passed by Lok Sabha on July 4.

NHAI Signs MoU with NIIF for funding highway projects


  • National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) today signed an MoU with National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) in the presence of Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Gen (Retd) V K Singh, MoS. NIIF is a fund promoted by Government of India to give boost to the infrastructure sector in the country. The MoU is related to co-operation in formation of SPVs to execute the fund arrangement for large size road projects particularly green field projects to be executed by NHAI in future.

  • Greece’s new centre-right Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has vowed the country will “proudly raise its head again” after winning a landslide victory.
  • New Democracy’s Mitsotakis added he would not fail to “honour the hopes” of the Greek people. The win comes four years after Alexis Tsipras’s leftist Syriza party swept to power promising an end to austerity.
  • Tsipras’s Syriza was in second place with 31.53%, according to official figures released after almost all districts returned their results.

LinkedIn appoints named Ashutosh Gupta as Country Manager for India

  • LinkedIn, a social network for professionals owned by Microsoft, named Ashutosh Gupta as Country Manager for India, its second such appointment in six months.
  • Mahesh Narayanan was the country manager for LinkedIn for six months from January to June 2019.
  • ET is awaiting comment from LinkedIn on Narayanan’s surprise departure.
  • Gupta, who takes over from September, will report to Olivier Legrand, LinkedIn’s Managing Director for the Asia Pacific region and will the company’s APAC senior management team.

  • State-owned engineering firm BHEL said Tuesday that Nalin Shinghal has been appointed its chairman and managing director for five years.
  • “The competent authority has approved the appointment of Nalin Shinghal as chairman and managing director, BHEL, for a period of 5 years with effect from the date of his assumption of charge of the post on or after July 1, 2019, or till the date of his superannuation or until further orders, whichever is the earliest,” a BSE filing said.

DRDO successfully tests armour-piercing Nag missiles at Pokhran range

  • Moving closer toward the induction of the Nag anti-tank guided missiles into the Army, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Sunday carried out three successful test firings of the missiles in the Pokhran firing ranges.
  • “The missiles were test-fired during both day and night on Sunday during the trials. All three tests were successful,” DRDO officials said.
  • Government sources said the missile is in the final stages of being inducted into the Army which will use it by mounting them on modified armoured vehicles.

Indian Naval Ship Tarkash arrives in Morocco for 3-day visit

  • Indian Naval Ship Tarkash arrived at Tangier, Morocco on Monday for a three day visit. The visit is part of an ongoing Overseas Deployment by the Indian Navy to the Mediterranean Sea, Africa and Europe. The visit seeks to strengthen the bonds of friendship between India and Morocco.
  • INS Tarkash, commanded by Captain Sathish Vasudev, is a state-of-the-art stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, equipped with a versatile range of weapons and sensors capable of addressing threats in all three dimensions. The ship is a part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet and is under the operational Command of Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.

ISRO ties up with Russian agency to select, train Indian astronauts

  • Almost two months after Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) signed an agreement to select and train the crew of India’s maiden manned space mission, Gaganyaan-1, the country’s premier space agency has signed a contract with Russia’s Glavkosmos for selection support, medical examination and space training of Indian astronauts.
  • The contract was signed on June 27 by Director of Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) of ISRO, Dr  S Unnikrishnan Nair and First Deputy Director General of Glavkosmos (part of Roscosmos State Corporation of Russia) Natalia Lokteva.
