  • The scheme aims: Extending an aid of ₹24,000 every year for each handloom weaver family that is currently running a loom.

  • Software major Wipro on 20th December partnered with the Indian IT industry apex body Nasscom to upskill 10,000 students from 20 engineering colleges across the country.
  • “As part of our CSR programme, we will train 10,000 engineering students to skill them in disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, cyber security and internet of things.

  • The Geneva-based WEF has selected ‘Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World’ as the theme for its 2020 annual meeting, which will bring together 3,000 global leaders.
  • Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Mansukh Mandaviya as well as three Chief Ministers — Amarinder Singh, Kamal Nath and B.S. Yeddyurappa — will join over 100 Indian CEOs in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos next month for the World Economic Forum’s (WEF’s) 50th annual meeting, which will be attended by thousands of rich and powerful from across the globe.

Malayali boy Aditya to receive Bharat Award for bravery

  • The most prestigious of the National Bravery Awards, given away by the Indian Council for Child Welfare, the Bharat Award has gone to Aditya for rescuing 20 people from a burning bus that was on the move.

  • Nadal, who’s currently the world number one, this year won his 12th French Open and a fourth US Open.
  • Barty, who’s also on top in women’s rankings, won her maiden Grand Slam title this year after defeating Marketa Vondrousova in French Open.

  • On 22 December 2012, the former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, paid tribute to Srinivasa Ramanujan at a function organised on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan in Chennai. 22 December was declared as National Mathematics Day. Thus, on 22 December 2012, National Mathematics Day was celebrated across the country for the first time.

  • Veteran Kannada writer and critic Prof L S Sheshagiri Rao passed away at his residence here on 20th December due to illness. He was 94. Prof LSS, as he was popular in literary circles, was widely known for his English-Kannada dictionary and critical works, both in Kannada and English.
