Integral Coach Factory produces 3000 Coaches in record 215 days

  • Integral Coach Factory (ICF) of Indian Railways has produced its 3000th coach of the year in less than nine months.
  • This would help in meeting the growing demand for coaches. The number of working days to achieve the above figure has been reduced from 289 days in the last year to 215 days in the current year.
  • Reports, till the year 2014, the same amount of time was being taken for the production of only 1000 coaches.

  • Under the NIRBHAYA Fund, projects of Rs 7,000 crore, including setting up of 1,023 fast-track courts, have been approved by the Modi government.
  • In a tribute to the 23-year-old Delhi gangrape victim, then Congress-led government had announced setting up ‘Nirbhaya Fund’ of Rs 1,000 crore for safety and empowerment of women in the Budget presented in February 2013.
  • In 2013-14, before the NDA government came into the picture there was zero utilisation of the NIRBHAYA Fund, and since this government came into play it has okayed projects worth Rs 7,000 crore.

  • Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on December 21 named Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz as the country’s first prime minister since 1976.
  • Marrero, 56, has been tourism minister for 16 years, presiding over a rise in visitors and a hotel construction boom that has made tourism one of the most important sectors of the Cuban economy.
  • The position of prime minister was held by Fidel Castro from 1959 to 1976, when a new constitution changed his title to president and eliminated the post of prime minister.

Eight West African nations rename common currency to Eco

  • Eight West African countries have agreed to change the name of their common currency to Eco and severed their earlier currency CFA Franc’s links to former colonial ruler France.
  • The CFA Franc was initially pegged to the French franc and has been linked to the euro for about two decades. Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo currently use the currency.

  • The Central government has made financial inclusion its key priority, with a vision to have universal access to banking facilities for every household, financial literacy, access to credit, insurance and pension.
  • Vakrangee has recently partnered with Union Bank of India for 20,000 banking BC points for Nextgen Vakrangee Kendra. The bank will allot in a batch of 2,500 BC points, whereby 70-80 per cent of BC points would be in tier-5 and tier-6 locations and which would include five per cent of the outlets to be opened in aspirational districts and LWE (Left Wing Extremism) areas.

Indian-American Dr Monisha Ghosh appointed 1st woman CTO of US' communications commission

  • Indian-American Dr Monisha Ghosh has been appointed as the first woman Chief Technology Officer at the US government’s powerful Federal Communications Commission.
  • She will advise Indian-American Chairman of the FCC Ajit Pai and the agency on technology and engineering issues, and work closely with the Office of Engineering and Technology. Ghosh will take charge on January 13, 2020.
  • About Federal Communications Commission: The FCC regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and US territories.

Sangita Reddy appointed as Ficci President

  • Sangita Reddy, joint managing director, Apollo Hospitals Group has taken over as the President of industry chamber Ficci for 2019-20.
  • She succeeds Sandip Somany, vice chairman and managing director, HSIL.
  • The Walt Disney Company APAC President and Star & Disney India Chairman Uday Shankar has been elevated as Senior Vice President of Ficci, and Sanjiv Mehta, chairman and managing director, HUL has joined Ficci leadership as Vice President.

23rd December: Kisan Diwas 2019

  • Kisan Diwas or National Farmers’ Day is observed across India on December 23. The day honours Chaudhary Charan Singh, the 5th Prime Minister of India whose was born on this day. It was in the year 2001, the Government of India decided to observe December 23 every year as Kisan Diwas.
  • During his tenure as the Prime Minister of India from July 1979 to January 1980, Chaudhary Charan Singh introduced a slew of policies to improve the lives and conditions of farmers in the country. He also played a leading role in the agricultural sector of the country by introducing bills for farmers’ reforms.

Sahitya Akademi Winner Dr G Nanjundan Found passed away in Bengaluru House

  • Eminent translator and Sahitya Akademi award winner Dr G Nanjundan was found dead at his residence here on 21st December.
  • Dr Nanjundan earned recognition for translating more than a dozen books from Kannada to Tamil. They included Jnanpith award winner UR Ananthamurthy’s ‘Bhava’ and ‘Avasthe’.
  • He received the Akademi Translation prize in 2012 for his work “Akkaa”, a Tamil translation of short stories of various Kannada women writers.
