DGCA flags Air India with four notices for breaking safety regulations

  • The DGCA has sent four show-cause notices to Air India for breaking safety rules 29 times. These include not giving enough rest to pilots and crew, not keeping enough cabin crew on very long flights, and problems with training.
  • The notices also said that Air India still has big problems in its safety system, even after the DGCA had warned them before. This shows the airline is not following rules properly and does not have strong checks to keep passengers safe.
  • Out of the 29 safety rule breaks, 19 were about pilot training. There were delays in giving pilots their required refresher training, so they had to fly under the supervision of instructors. This was seen between July 2024 and June 2025.
  • Some of these training problems were for flights to Kathmandu airport. Kathmandu has a table-top runway, so pilots need special training to land there safely. Not giving this training can be very dangerous.
  • Three of the 29 rule breaks were about pilots not getting their weekly rest. Between June 2024 and June 2025, this affected one first officer along with two captains. This means Air India did not follow rules about giving pilots proper rest to avoid fatigue.
  • Three shortcomings were also found by the DGCA in cabin crew training. This shows cabin crew were not trained properly for safety and emergency situations on flights, which is risky for passengers.
  • An official said that even though DGCA warned Air India many times earlier and took action, the airline still has serious problems in checking if rules are followed, in crew planning, and in training.
  • Air India has been given 14 days by the DGCA to respond. The airline said it has received the notices and will reply on time, reaffirming its commitment to passenger safety.

Bihar’s draft voter list may exclude over 61 lakh names

  • Over 61 lakh people in Bihar might not be included in the upcoming draft voter list, which will be released on August 1. This information comes from data shared by the Election Commission ahead of the deadline.
  • Among these are seven lakh people who have not submitted their enumeration forms as part of the special intensive revision process. Officials said on Thursday that the last date for submission was July 25.
  • The data further showed that 21.6 lakh voters have passed away, 31.5 lakh have permanently moved out of Bihar, seven lakh are registered in more than one place, and one lakh voters could not be traced.
  • According to the Election Commission, they have received and digitised forms for 7.21 crore voters, covering 91.32% of Bihar’s total electorate. These voters’ names will be included in the draft list.
  • Digitisation of the remaining forms is ongoing. Booth-level officers and agents will check these lists after they are published on August 1, and people will then have the chance to claim missing names or file objections.
  • As per the 2025 electoral rolls, Bihar has nearly 7.89 crore registered voters. The special intensive revision process is being done to remove names of dead people, duplicates, or people who moved out, and to include all eligible voters correctly.
  • After the draft list is published, copies will be given to 12 main political parties. It will also be uploaded on the Election Commission’s website so that people can check, claim, or object.
  • Lists of people who did not fill forms, dead voters, and those who moved were shared with political parties on July 20. This will help parties point out any mistakes before the final list is ready.
  • Any voter or political party can file claims if names are missing or raise objections if someone’s name is wrongly included until September 1. This ensures people get time to correct the voter list.
  • Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said it is wrong to keep names of dead people or those who moved away in voter lists. He said allowing those who are not eligible to vote violates the Constitution.
  • He also said all citizens must think deeply about this issue beyond politics – whether such ineligible voters should remain on lists in Bihar or anywhere in India.
  • Opposition parties criticised this move, saying it will take away voting rights from crores of eligible people. Due to these protests, Parliament work was stopped on Thursday as parties raised concerns.

BJP begins search for Vice-President following Dhankhar’s exit

  • The sudden resignation of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar has now led to concerns in NDA about who will replace him. His successor is expected to be a BJP leader who can handle Rajya Sabha smoothly.
  • Jagdeep Dhankhar was earlier Governor of West Bengal. Before joining BJP, he was in Janata Dal and Congress. Leaders in BJP believe the next Vice-President will mainly be someone from their party who has earlier been a Governor.
  • NDA partners have been told informally that the new Vice-President will be from BJP. Senior coalition leaders said PM Modi wants someone who is tactful and politically smart to manage the Rajya Sabha properly.
  • A senior BJP leader said PM Modi is now visiting the U.K. and Maldives. He will return by July 26. By then, BJP will prepare a shortlist of possible names for the Vice-President post.
  • There were tensions between Mr. Dhankhar and the government because of some of his comments about the judiciary and other institutions. Government leaders felt he should not have said such things when they were trying to improve relations with the judiciary.
  • The government also felt Mr. Dhankhar was not tactful enough while handling Rajya Sabha matters, even though he ensured government bills were passed. His style of dealing with issues made some BJP leaders unhappy.
  • Sources said Mr. Dhankhar felt upset when the Opposition moved a motion to remove him. This was the first time such a motion was moved against a Rajya Sabha presiding officer. But no senior minister defended him publicly, which disappointed him.
  • Deputy Chairperson Harivansh dismissed the motion. But Mr. Dhankhar felt bad that no Union Minister openly supported him, even though he held such a high constitutional post and had a long political career.
  • The Election Commission has started work for electing the next Vice-President. The government feels that appointing a new person will close what they call a dramatic chapter in the Vice-President’s office.
