Russia’s Biggest Airstrike Hits Major Target in Kyiv
- Russia carried out its largest air attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, since the war began. Missiles and drones were used in the assault, which killed four people across the country and badly damaged an important government building.
- Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia sent out 810 drones along with decoys. Out of these, Ukraine’s defense forces managed to shoot down 747 drones and four missiles.
- Thick smoke was seen coming from the roof of Kyiv’s main government headquarters. It was not clear whether this was due to a direct hit or from falling debris, but it raised fears that Russia is now targeting central government buildings that were earlier left alone.
- The devastated building is home to Ukraine’s Cabinet and Ministers. Soon after the attack, police blocked entry, while fire trucks and ambulances rushed to the spot to control the situation and help possible victims inside.
- Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said this was the biggest drone attack by Russia since the war started in February 2022. Russia also fired 13 missiles along with the drone strikes.
- Ukraine reported that nine missiles and 54 drones hit different places at 33 locations across the country, showing how widespread and serious the attack was.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the United States to give a strong response, stating that Sunday’s massive attack left four people dead and 44 injured.
- Zelenskyy also spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, saying both countries are planning new joint steps to strengthen Ukraine’s defense.
- Macron strongly condemned Russia, accusing it of spreading terror and refusing peace. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also criticized Russia, calling the strikes cowardly and warning that Putin is acting as if no one can stop him. He urged the world to stand united in support of Ukraine.
- In Kyiv, the attack took the lives of a mother and her three-month-old baby, while 20 more people were injured, city officials said.
- Kyiv’s city administration chief Tymur Tkachenko stated that emergency teams recovered the mother and baby’s bodies from the debris. He added that at least 10 different sites in the city were damaged.
- In the Sviatoshynskyi district, drones hit a nine-story building, while in Darnytskyi district, a four-story residential building was damaged, leaving heavy destruction to homes.
- Zelenskyy called for more sanctions on Russia, saying such killings are not accidents but planned crimes that only prolong the war. He said world leaders have the power to stop Russia if they act strongly and together.
- Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko shared a video from inside the damaged government property. She said a fire spread over 800 square meters but was later put out by firefighters.
- Svyrydenko added that Russia has no interest in peace talks, and she urged international partners to help close Ukraine’s skies, apply tougher sanctions, and provide a reliable security system to protect the country from future attacks.
- Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry said its strikes used “high-precision weapons and drones” aimed at military targets—like drone factories, air bases, and storage sites across Ukraine, including near Kyiv. It denied hitting civilian or government buildings, suggesting damage in Kyiv may have been from falling drones.
- This was the second large-scale drone and missile strike on Kyiv in just two weeks, raising fears of even more attacks in the future and killing hopes for peace talks.
- The escalation came soon after European leaders had urged President Putin to end the war. At the same time, 26 allied countries pledged to send troops to Ukraine after the war ends, as a reassurance force.
32-Year-Old Man Diagnosed With Brain Infection in Kasaragod
- In Kerala, a 32-year-old man from Pananthady panchayat in Kasaragod has been found suffering from amoebic meningoencephalitis, a dangerous brain infection. He is now under treatment at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital.
- Health workers believe he got the infection while bathing in a pond or river. Recently, a 45-year-old man from Wayanad also died due to the same disease.
- That death was the fourth in Kerala this month. Earlier, an eight-year-old boy from Thamarassery, a three-month-old baby, and a woman from Malappuram had also died.
- Investigations showed the baby got the infection through contaminated well water at home. This has raised big concerns about how water sources are spreading this deadly amoeba.
- Right now, 11 patients are being treated at Kozhikode hospital, including the man from Kasaragod. Out of them, two are in critical condition. Among the patients, there are two children and nine adults.
- This disease, caused by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri, is extremely rare but almost always deadly. The amoeba lives in stagnant water like ponds and rivers, especially in warm weather.
- It enters the body through the nose, then moves to the brain, and causes severe damage. First symptoms are fever, headache, vomiting, and stiff neck. The disease spreads quickly, and later symptoms include seizures, fainting, and memory loss. Early treatment is very important, but survival chances are very low.
