  • Union Minister Prahlad Singh Patel on 13 october participated in BRICS Culture Ministers’ meeting held in Curitiba, Brazil.
  • Speaking at the event Prahlad Patel asserted that BRICS for India is a valuable forum for consultation, coordination and cooperation on contemporary global issues of mutual interest.

Typhoon hagibis hits Japan

  • Typhoon Hagibis slammed into Japan over the weekend, dropping more than 35 inches of rain in some places and causing catastrophic flooding in communities in the region around Tokyo, as well as further inland.
  • Japanese public broadcaster NHK reports that the death toll from the storm is now at more than 50 people.

Retail inflation rises to 3.99% in September due to costlier food items

  • Retail inflation spiked to 3.99% in September mainly due to higher prices of food items, government data showed on 14 October.
  • The consumer price index (CPI) based inflation was registered at 3.28% in August. On year-on-year basis, the inflation was 3.70% in September 2018. The price rise in the food basket was recorded at 5.11% in September, as against 2.99% in the preceding month.

    Again, Sourav Ganguly appointed as a new BCCI president. 

  • Ganguly, who is currently the president of Cricket Association of Bengal, (CAB) will have to demit his post in September, 2020 as he will go into compulsory cooling off period.

  • Rajesh Jain, Managing Director of Panacea Biotec Limited, will continue as the Vice President.
  • Satish played a crucial role in shaping policies concerning the pharmaceutical sector as well as the economy, such as policy formulation on India’s patent law, drug pricing and important amendments to the Drugs & Cosmetics Act.

  • The 2019 Nobel Prize for economics goes to Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced.
  • Reasons: The research conducted by the 2019 Economic Sciences Laureates has considerably improved our ability to fight global poverty. In just two decades, their new experiment-based approach has transformed development economics, which is now a flourishing field of research.

Environmentalist Chandi Prasad Bhatt awarded Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration

  • Noted environmentalist and social activist Chandi Prasad Bhatt has been awarded the Indira Gandhi award for national integration for the years 2017 and 2018.
  • This award consists of a citation and Rs 10 lakh in cash to be given to the awardee by chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the Congress president. It would be presented on October 31, the day former prime minister Indira Gandhi was killed.

ICC readmits Zimbabwe, Nepal as members

  • The ICC on 14th October decided to readmit Zimbabwe and Nepal as its members following the conclusion of the Board meetings here.
  • Zimbabwe and Nepal were suspended in July this year following government interference in the running of the Board.
  • Nepal: Nepal has also been reinstated on a conditional basis following their 2016 suspension for breach of the ICC regulations which prohibit government interference and require free and fair elections.
  • Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe Sports Minister for her commitment to the reinstatement of Zimbabwe Cricket. Her desire to work in support of Zimbabwe Cricket was clear and she has unconditionally complied with the conditions set down by the ICC Board.
