The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  23rd November 2021

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Sludge (noun)

Meaning: thick, soft, wet mud or a similar viscous mixture of liquid and solid components, especially the product of an industrial or refining process. (कीचड़)

Synonyms: mud, muck, mire

Sentence: All dumping of sludge will be banned by 1998.

  1. Appeasement (noun)

Meaning: the action or process of appeasing. (मनौती)

Synonyms: conciliation, placation, pacification

Antonyms: discomfort, unrest

Sentence: Music is appeasement to shattered nerves.

  1. Obeisance (noun)

Meaning: deferential respect. (श्रद्धा)

Synonyms: respect, homage, worship

Antonyms: disrespect, impudence, insolence

Sentence: They made obeisance to the sultan.

  1. Fidgety (adj.)

Meaning: inclined to fidget; restless or uneasy. (बेचैन)

Synonyms: restless, restive, nervous

Antonyms: calm, cool

Sentence: As the questioning continued, he became fidgety and uneasy.

  1. Skedaddle (verb)

Meaning: depart quickly or hurriedly; run away. (भागना)

Synonyms: run away, flee, runoff

Antonyms: beard, brave, confront

Sentence: When he saw us, he skedaddled.

  1. Onus (noun)

Meaning: used to refer to something that is one’s duty or responsibility. (बोझ)

Synonyms: burden, responsibility, liability

Antonyms: award, credit, honor

Sentence: The onus is on you to show that you have suffered the loss.

  1. Exultant (adj.)

Meaning: triumphantly happy. (ख़ुशियां मनानेवाला)

Synonyms: jubilant, thrilled, triumphant

Antonyms: dejected, depressed, disconsolate

Sentence: The exultant crowds were dancing in the streets.

  1. Portend (verb)

Meaning: be a sign or warning that (something, especially something momentous or calamitous) is likely to happen. (संकेत मिलता)

Synonyms: presage, augur, foreshadow

Antonyms: describe, narrate, recite

Sentence: The change did not portend a basic improvement in social conditions.

  1. Sumptuous (adj.)

Meaning: splendid and expensive-looking. (वैभवशाली)

Synonyms: lavish, luxurious, deluxe

Antonyms: economical, frugal, meager

Sentence: The guests turned up dressed in sumptuous evening gowns.

  1. Chastise (verb)

Meaning: rebuke or reprimand severely. (दंड देना)

Synonyms: scold, upbraid, berate

Antonyms: excuse, pardon, spare

Sentence: He chastised his colleagues for their laziness.
